SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2

Food for special medical purposes. For preterm and low birthweight babies when discharged from hospital.

NEW Formula

SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2 is a special catch-up formula intended for the dietary management of preterm and low birthweight babies who are not solely fed breast milk. It is a nutritionally complete formula for use on discharge from hospital or when a low birthweight formula is no longer appropriate. It is suitable for use as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months corrected age.

SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2 should only be used following recommendation by a healthcare professional. For enteral use only. Your healthcare professional will advise you when to move from SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2 to another formula.

Preterm is defined as infants born at or before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Infants who are born prematurely weigh much less than term infants, this is because a significant amount of the baby's weight gain occurs between 36 and 40 weeks of pregnancy.

Preparing your baby's feed

Whilst this product is made under strict hygienic conditions, it is not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill.

  • Step 1

Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions.

  • Step 2

Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes. Measure the required amount of water (see feeding guide) into a sterilised bottle, carefully – the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

  • Step 3

Using only the scoop provided, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide), levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Store the scoop in suspension inside the can and replace plastic lid.

  • Step 4

Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well. Cool bottle under cold running water or in a bowl or jug of cold water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist.

Important notice

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2 is not intended for use with newborn preterm babies, for whom fortified breast milk or a low birthweight formula such as SMA® PRO Gold Prem 1 is more appropriate. SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2 is not suitable for for Halal or vegetarians or those who are allergic to cows' milk protein, lactose intolerant, or who suffer from galactosaemia or require a galactose free diet. Never leave your baby alone during feeding as there is a risk they might choke.

Important advice to mothers

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. SMA® Nutrition fully supports this and continued breastfeeding, along with the introduction of complementary foods as advised by your healthcare professional.

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk.
If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health, as advised by your healthcare professional.
When introducing weaning foods, remember that they need to be suitable and safe, and fed appropriately to minimise any risk to your baby's health. The pages ahead and other subsequent communications we may have with you provide you with information on infant feeding and SMA® Nutrition products, including infant formula.

If you continue you will be accepting that SMA® Nutrition is supplying this information at your individual request and for educational purposes only.
