SMA Staydown® Anti-Reflux

Food for special medical purposes. For the dietary management of reflux and regurgitation. Suitable from birth. This formula should be used under medical supervision.
Babies' digestive systems mature at different rates and many healthy babies experience reflux due to their digestive system being immature. Many babies bring back some of their feeds, however, if your baby is bringing back milk more frequently, or in larger volumes, it may be best to speak to your GP. You’ll be happy to hear most babies grow out of this condition by 12 months of age, but in the meantime SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux may be recommended by your healthcare professional.

SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux benefits from over 90 years of experience in advancing baby nutrition and has been specifically developed for the dietary management of babies with reflux and regurgitation, when they are not being breastfed. It is nutritionally complete up to 6 months and can be used as the sole source of nutrition from birth in place of your usual formula feed, for older babies it can be mixed with foods once weaning has begun. SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux contains an easily digestible natural corn starch (maize) which helps the feed settle more easily in baby’s tummy. It has a normal consistency in the bottle and will flow through a standard teat as it thickens in the tummy and not in the bottle. It should be made up with chilled water that has previously been boiled. Consult a healthcare professional before first use and if no change is seen after 2 weeks of use.

All babies are different and symptoms may subside around the time of weaning, in which case you could switch to SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk which is suitable for babies 6 months + and is designed to complement the weaning diet. If you need to continue using SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux it can be used up to 12 months in conjunction with solid foods.

Halal approved and suitable for vegetarians.

Why SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux?

Nutritionally complete tailored formula

SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux is scientifically developed to meet the specific nutritional needs of babies with reflux (regurgitation). SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux thickens in the stomach, not in the bottle so there is no need for a fast flow teat.

Omega 3 & 6 LCPs (Long Chain Polyunsaturates)

Although LCPs can be made in the body, infants have a high demand for these nutrients. SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux contains Omega 3 & 6 LCPs within levels recommended by experts.

Fortified with iron

SMA Staydown® Anti-reflux is fortified with iron to help normal cognitive development.

Preparing your baby's feed

Whilst this product is made under strict hygienic conditions, it is not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill.

  • Notice

SMA Staydown® needs to be made up with chilled water that has been previously boiled.

  • Step 1

Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions.

  • Step 2

Boil fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes. Measure the required amount of water (see feeding guide) into the sterilised bottle, carefully – the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

  • Step 3

Place teat and cap on bottle and cool bottle under running water, or in a jug or bowl of cold water, then refrigerate until chilled. Use water within 24 hours. WATER MUST BE CHILLED PRIOR TO ADDING POWDER.

  • Step 4

Prepare each feed as and when your baby needs it. Using the scoop provided, add the correct number of scoops of powder to the refrigerated water (see feeding guide), levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Replace plastic lid on can.

  • Step 5

Replace the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and mix the powder and water together by ROLLING THE BOTTLE VIGOROUSLY BETWEEN YOUR HANDS – DO NOT SHAKE.

  • Step 6

Allow feed to reach room temperature and feed as soon as possible, and always within 2 hours. DO NOT WARM FEED AS IT WILL CAUSE MILK TO THICKEN.

Important feeding information

  • For hygienic reasons, discard unfinished feed in the bottle as soon as possible, and always within 2 hours.

  • For older babies, made-up formula can be added to food but not heated.

  • Flows through standard teat.

  • For enteral use only.

  • Do not add extra powder or water to make the feeds stronger or weaker and do not press powder into scoop. Using too much or too little powder can make your baby ill.

  • Do not use with other feed thickeners or antacids.

  • Never add any food to the milk in your baby’s bottle.

  • Do not warm feeds in a microwave as it will cause milk to thicken, and hot spots may occur and cause scalding.

  • Remember, cows’ milk should not be used as a drink during the first year.

Scoop may become submerged in the powder during transit.

Important notice

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA Staydown® is a special formula intended for the dietary management of bottle-fed babies when significant reflux (regurgitation) is a problem. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months of age, and in conjunction with solid food up to 12 months of age. If the baby’s reflux does not improve within 2 weeks of starting SMA Staydown®, or if the baby fails to thrive, the family doctor should be consulted. When bottle-feeding do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk feeds with teeth as this increases the risk of tooth decay. Ask your healthcare professional or dentist for advice. Never leave your baby alone during feeding as there is a risk they might choke.

Important advice to mothers

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. SMA® Nutrition fully supports this and continued breastfeeding, along with the introduction of complementary foods as advised by your healthcare professional.

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk.
If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health, as advised by your healthcare professional.
When introducing weaning foods, remember that they need to be suitable and safe, and fed appropriately to minimise any risk to your baby's health. The pages ahead and other subsequent communications we may have with you provide you with information on infant feeding and SMA® Nutrition products, including infant formula.

If you continue you will be accepting that SMA® Nutrition is supplying this information at your individual request and for educational purposes only.
