SMA Gold Prem® 2 - Liquid

Food for special medical purposes. For preterm low birthweight babies when discharged from hospital.

SMA Gold Prem® 2 is a special catch-up formula intended for the dietary management of preterm low birthweight babies who are not solely fed breast milk. It is a nutritionally complete formula for use on discharge from hospital or when a low birthweight formula is no longer appropriate. It is suitable for use as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months corrected age.

Preterm is defined as infants born at or before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Infants who are born prematurely weight much less than term infants, this is because a significant amount of baby’s weight gain occurs between 36 and 40 weeks of pregnancy.

SMA Gold Prem® 2 should only be used following recommendation by a healthcare professional. For enteral use only. Your healthcare professional will advise you when to move from SMA Gold Prem® 2 to another formula..

We have recently updated our specials formulas in line with the UK and EU legislation (EU Regulation 2016/128). This means the nutritional composition requirements for formulas will change, and all manufacturers will have to update their formulas. But we know any change big or small even when for the better, can cause concern when it comes to your little human. Baby milks is one of the most heavily regulated and tested food products in the world, and we can assure you that the reformulated milks are safe for babies. We have worked hard to ensure that your baby should not notice any difference between the old and new milks. For more information please visit our FAQs or contact the SMA Careline® who will be happy to chat about the updated formulas.

Important notice

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA Gold Prem® 2 is not intended for use with newborn preterm babies, for whom fortified breast milk or a low birthweight formula such as SMA Gold Prem® 1 is more appropriate. SMA Gold Prem® 2 is not suitable for those who are allergic to cows’ milk protein, lactose intolerant or who suffer from galactosaemia or require a galactose free diet.
When bottle-feeding, do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk feeds with teeth as this increases the risk of tooth decay. Ask your healthcare professional or dentist for advice. Always hold your baby while feeding. Do not leave baby unattended as they might choke.

Important advice to mothers

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. SMA® Nutrition fully supports this and continued breastfeeding, along with the introduction of complementary foods as advised by your healthcare professional.

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk.
If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health, as advised by your healthcare professional.
When introducing weaning foods, remember that they need to be suitable and safe, and fed appropriately to minimise any risk to your baby's health. The pages ahead and other subsequent communications we may have with you provide you with information on infant feeding and SMA® Nutrition products, including infant formula.

If you continue you will be accepting that SMA® Nutrition is supplying this information at your individual request and for educational purposes only.
